This is the site of the Third Congregational Church, remembered in old records as “The Old South Meetinghouse, Time Worn and Gray, That Stood Fronting East, by the King's Highway That Goeth To Billingsgate,” a phrase echoed by Herman Doone in 1830. The stone of Deacon Samuel Doane bears the inscription, “Death is a debut to nature due; as I have paid it so must you.”
