Connemara in Flat Rock, North Carolina, preserves the home and farm where Carl Sandburg lived for the last twenty-two years of his life and produced more than a third of his published work. Sandburg and his wife Lilian bought the estate in 1945, renovated it extensively, and made it a household for their family, library, and Lilian’s champion dairy goats. The property’s history reaches back to the late 1830s, when Christopher Memminger established a summer home later expanded and renamed Connemara by subsequent owners. After Sandburg’s death in 1967, Lilian gave the estate to the federal government, and it became the first national park established to honor a poet.
