Palmyra's history includes the Erie Canal reaching the community in 1822, the incorporation of the Village of Palmyra in 1827, and the printing of the Book of Mormon in the Grandin Building in 1830. In 1849, Palmyra held the first fair in New York State, which later became the Wayne County Fair. In 1892, the Republican Flag Pole was raised to honor President Benjamin Harrison and was rededicated in 2005. The Garlock Packing Company was incorporated in 1906, and in 1917 Pliny T. Sexton donated the Village Park to the community. In 2000, the Palmyra New York temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints was dedicated.
