The Wayside Home was established, maintained, and operated by women of Burke County, Georgia, now Burke and Jenkins Counties, for the comfort and relief of Confederate soldiers. It was associated with the name The Wayside Home and honored the women who served there with valor and patriotism. The home’s presidents were Mrs. Ann MacKenzie, Mrs. Elizabeth Jones, Mrs. P. Ansom Lewis, and Mrs. Amos Whitehead, during the years 1861 to 1864.
