El Dorado County Veterans Monument was dedicated on Veterans Day, November 11, 2006, by the Friends of the Monument and the citizens of El Dorado County to honor those who have served the cause of freedom, with founders Richard W. Buchanan and Peter J. Wolfe, a board of directors drawn from veterans, and tributes that honor U.S. Navy Seabees, the men and women of the United States Marine Corps who have given their lives since November 10, 1775, the mission of the California Department of Veterans Affairs from 1946 to 2006, those who served in the Vietnam War and later died as a result of their service, Colonel Wray F. Sagaser and the 11th Armored Division's role in World War II's Battle of the Bulge, those from El Dorado County who paid the supreme sacrifice in World War II, the 2,335 members of the U.S. military forces killed in action during the December 7, 1941 bombing and strafing attack on Oahu, the formal surrender of Japan aboard U.S.S. Missouri on September 2, 1945, Gunnery Sergeant William Frank Brazelton's World War II service, and Lt. Col. Edward A. Schlueter's service in the Army Air Corps and U.S. Air Force; the monument's history traces back to Buchanan's experience on May 24, 1968, during the Battle of Le Bac, when, serving with the 3rd Battalion, 27th Marines, he witnessed the fighting spirit and selfless devotion to duty of fellow Marines and corpsmen and vowed that such dedication and sacrifice would not be forgotten.
