Jackson County was formed in 1831 from Mason, Kanawha and Wood and was named for General Andrew Jackson, the seventh President of the United States. Jesse Hughes, a noted Indian fighter, spent his declining years in this county, where he is buried. Mason County was formed in 1804 from Kanawha and was named for George Mason. Here, in 1774, Virginia frontiersmen under Gen. Andrew Lewis cleared the way for American independence by defeating federated western tribes under Chief Cornstalk.
