Running a farm required maintaining, repairing, and storing equipment; planting and harvesting crops and keeping them dry until needed; and feeding and sheltering farm animals. Forest Home Farms has 14 outbuildings, from large barns to outhouses, that served these functions. A shop and garage built around 1890 became a place to work on machinery as gas-powered vehicles became common, and one end housed Travis Boone’s 1915 Pierce Arrow car. A granary built around 1875 with tightly fitted boards helped keep rodents out and stored grain such as barley for farm animals. A gas shed built around 1930 stored fuel for farm equipment and had metal siding for safety. An 1850s barn, built with hand-hewn beams and wooden pegs, probably originally housed animals, their feed, and horse-drawn equipment; it was already about 50 years old in the early 1900s and is one of the oldest structures in the San Ramon Valley. Other buildings contained machinery to hull and dry walnuts grown throughout the valley and beyond, and a warehouse dating from the 1930s now houses the tractor collection and farm exhibits.
