Little Buffalo State Park, a 923-acre park near Newport, combines recreation with the preserved history of the Little Buffalo Creek valley. Named for a creek and ridge associated with bison once believed to have roamed the area, it reflects a long human past from prehistoric cultures to early farming, tavern life, charcoal iron production, and milling. The Blue Ball Tavern, opened in 1811, served travelers and War of 1812 messengers before later becoming the Blue Ball Tavern Museum. Shoaff’s Mill, once used by local farmers, has been restored to operation. Opened in 1972, the park also offers Holman Lake, trails, hunting, and wildlife habitat.
