In 1903, Dr. W.B. Hopkins of Cumberland opened Wisconsin’s first tuberculosis sanatorium here, building an office and three one-story frame buildings with screen sides for a men’s ward, a women’s ward, and a dining hall. He treated tuberculosis cases here in summer, emphasizing “pure air, day and night” along with close medical attention, good food, and restrained exercise to keep patients “cheerful and hopeful, temperate in all things.” Weekly rates were $15, or a patient could build a little cabin on the grounds and receive medical treatment for $10 monthly. Physicians including Dr. F.G. Johnson of Lake Nebagamon volunteered their services. Operating losses led to the sanatorium’s abandonment in 1905, but the effort stimulated inquiry into the treatment of tuberculosis in Wisconsin.
