Parmer County was formed from Young and Bexar Territories, created August 21, 1876, and organized May 7, 1907. It was named in honor of Martin Parmer, who came to Texas in 1825 and located at Mound Prairie, was a leader in the Fredonian War in 1826, signed the Texas Declaration of Independence, and died in 1850. The county seat was Parmerton in 1907 and has been Farwell since 1909.
