Mount Wilson, a prominent San Gabriel Mountains peak above Los Angeles, has long been valued for its sweeping views and accessible route from the lowlands. Indigenous people used the range before Benjamin Davis Wilson explored the mountain in the early eighteen fifties and helped establish the trail that drew hikers to the summit. Its greatest significance came with the Mount Wilson Observatory, where major instruments made the site central to twentieth-century astronomy and supported discoveries by Edwin Hubble and Albert A. Michelson. The summit later became a major Southern California transmission center, and it remains notable for its rare combination of scenery, science, and communications infrastructure.
