A ragged British column fought its way over Fiske Hill amid intense close-quarter fighting as British flankers tried to flush out Colonial snipers. At a nearby well, Minute Man James Hayward of Acton and a British soldier shot each other at close range, and another British redcoat, out of ammunition, handed over his weapon and surrendered. After the British column passed through, several wounded soldiers were left behind. Ebenezer Fiske’s cousin, Dr. Joseph Fiske, treated them in the parlor of Ebenezer’s house, but despite his efforts, the soldiers died and were buried on Ebenezer’s property.
