In December 1861, Creek Indians loyal to the Union were driven out of the Indian Territory into Kansas, where they endured the following winter with little food and shelter. After the Battle of Pea Ridge, Arkansas, they were eager to fight to reclaim their homes and lands. In May 1862, a regiment of eight companies of Creeks and two companies of Seminoles was organized under the command of Col. Stephen H. Wattles.
