Walnut Creek rose out of its banks here to a record crest of 13.41 feet, above the 12-foot flood stage, after two storms moved through parts of Iowa, sending several river systems above flood stage and dropping 5 inches of rain into the Walnut Creek watershed. At this location, the flooding covered NW 86th Street, a major thoroughfare carrying more than 25,000 daily vehicles and linking Clive, Urbandale, and West Des Moines, so closing the road has major impacts on the western side of the Greater Des Moines region. The Clive Greenbelt Park and Trail, part of the Greater Des Moines metropolitan trail system used by thousands of people throughout the year, also flood here, and the park serves as a critical open space within Walnut Creek's natural floodplain, which is designed to flood during periods of high water.
