At this location in Montezuma, the Erie and Cayuga-Seneca Canals joined in 1828, opening navigation to the Finger Lakes. The abutment that remains on the south side of the towpath trail is part of the crossover bridge that allowed drivers and teams to travel between the canals. Along the canal banks at this site stood the Exchange Hotel, circa 1830, with a stable that held extra teams for the line boat companies; town elections and meetings were also held there until the hotel burned in 1918. The towpath trail, dedicated on May 20, 2011, as the Byron Lapp Memorial Trail, leads into Montezuma Heritage Park, a historic parkland of more than 140 acres preserving historic resources and natural features along the Seneca River-Erie Canal.
