Sturdy pioneers settled this locality, endured hardship, and kept constant vigil against Indian attack, while soldiers on the frontier and elsewhere fought in the Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Mexican War; by their undaunted courage they made and kept the people free and independent. Patriotic men and women in the war with Spain and in the World War, serving as soldiers, sailors, nurses, and workers, contributed life, service, and money to defend the weak, to overthrow militarism, and to make the world safe for democracy.
