Named for Benjamin Franklin in 1800 by founder Alexander 'Guinea' Lewis, Franklin became the seat of St. Mary Parish in 1811, was incorporated in 1830, and served as Teche Country’s port of entry and trade center until the coming of railroads in the 1870s.
