Aspen Mountain, a long ridge south of Rock Springs in southwestern Wyoming, is known both for its geology and for its modern role as a communications hub. Its summit and upper slopes support towers, repeaters, and a Federal Aviation Administration long-range radar station that monitors regional high-altitude air traffic, while emergency systems there link with nearby Wilkins Peak to provide backup for Sweetwater County services. Geologically, the mountain sits within the Greater Green River Basin and the Rock Springs Uplift, with Miocene and Late Cretaceous formations, plus a silicified zone containing alunite and kaolinite. Federal surveys also examined the area for possible uranium and thorium anomalies.
