J.H. Marvin, a carpenter and builder from Cambridge, Massachusetts, came to Rugby in early 1880 and apparently built the front two-story portion of the house that stood here in 1880 or 1881. His family joined him in March 1882, but by August they had returned to Cambridge. A few months later Edward Bertz, a young German scholar who became the first librarian of the Thomas Hughes Free Public Library, bought the house, then sold it in March 1883 to the English Potbury family before returning to Germany. In Rugby, Henry Potbury worked as a baker and confectioner, served on the Rugby Fire Brigade and the Commissary shareholder's board, played in the Rugby Cornet Band, and was president of the Rugby Social Club, but by March 1886 the family had moved to Chattanooga, probably because they could not make an adequate living in Rugby. The next residents were the German Oberheu family, who came from Cincinnati in the late 1880s or early 1890s and became semi-permanent residents; they likely added to the rear of the house and named it Roadside Cottage. Their daughter Nellie Lender Oberheu married Charles Caster Brooks in 1902 and lived at Uffington House until her death in 1958. The home later housed two well-loved Christ Church priests and at some point became known as Grey Gables. Among those associated with it were Alexander Killeffer, a Pennsylvania-born priest of Swiss and English extraction who conducted services at Rugby's church in the early twentieth century and again in the 1930s, and Benjamin Thomas Bensted, who was in charge of Christ Church from about 1912 until his death in 1925. The house was still standing in 1930 and still owned by Bensted's widow, but it probably burned in the 1940s. Its site, shaped by changing names and families, is still marked by heirloom daffodils that bloom there in late winter and early spring.
