Abraham Lincoln Well
History
14
At age 21, Abraham Lincoln traveled through here with his father, Thomas, his step-mother, Sarah Bush Lincoln, and various relatives along the Palestine Road in 1830. When a broken wagon forced the family to stop, perhaps for several days while repairs were made, Abraham helped dig this well. The preserved well is 12 feet deep and contains approximately 4 feet of water, and its original capstone can be seen beside it. The family later settled at Goosenest Prairie, now Lincoln Log Cabin State Park, nine miles north of here.
