Fort Stanton–Snowy River Cave National Conservation Area in south central New Mexico was established in 2009 to protect both a notable cave system and the surrounding historic and natural landscape. The land originated in the former Fort Stanton Military Reservation, centered on a cavalry post founded by the U.S. Cavalry in 1855 during unrest in New Mexico Territory. Buffalo Soldier units later served in the region. Above ground, the historic fort survives under state management; below ground, Fort Stanton Cave and Snowy River Cave stand out for their exploration history, rare white calcite passage, and scientific significance. Together they give the area unusual historic, cultural, natural, and educational value.
