Troops were quartered in this area in cabins within the earthworks, most of them lumber structures with bark roofs measuring roughly 40 feet by 20 feet and at times extremely crowded. The circular mounds usually represent collapsed chimneys, and under certain ground conditions the outline of a cabin can be seen as a subtle embankment. Many of the mounds were vandalized before Cheat Summit Fort entered into public ownership.
