Ft Smallwood Park is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, and Anne Arundel County is working to restore the park and preserve its historic Concession Stand, built about 1932. Construction of a new boat ramp funded by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Serve triggered preservation of the Concession Stand under the National Historic Preservation Act because it is one of the historically significant park-era buildings surviving from the park's earliest years. The building was temporarily mothballed in 2013 to stabilize it and prevent further deterioration while the county develops plans and identifies funding for its rehabilitation. Its preservation and adaptive reuse are intended to recall Ft Smallwood Park's long history from farm to fort to fun, with the possibility that the Concession Stand may again sell candy, soft drinks, and hot dogs.
