On the morning of September 27, 1864, the Seventh Kentucky Mounted Infantry of Forrest's Cavalry, Confederate States Army, engaged the enemy on this field. Those who died in that faithful service and whose remains repose near this stone were Captain Joel T. Cochran of Company E, Captain David L. Nowlin of Company G, Sergeant Jack Waddell of Company I, Private Thomas Handberry of Company I, Sergeant James Hatchell of Company E, Private John Haneline of Company E, Private John Oliver of Company K, Private John Wilson of Company K, and an unknown Mississippian.
