During the Creek War of 1812–13, a pioneer stockade stood here under the command of Captains Sam Dale and Evan Austill. Choctaw chieftain Pushmattaha was often here. An expedition launched from this place ended in the noted Canoe Fight on the Alabama River immediately east of here.
