Stephen F. Jones spared no expense in building the outbuildings of Spring Hill Ranch, using high quality limestone from the Flint Hills that was quarried and hand cut in Chase County. The carriage house, a small building with wooden doors, protected a carriage or buggy from prairie sun, wind, rain, and snow. Beside it stands an unusual chicken house, where an arched, sod-covered roof and thick stone walls insulated the poultry from extreme prairie temperatures. Its attached open front shed served as an innovative covered scratch pen for chickens, though it was remodeled over the years for use as a shed. On top of the hill, the ranch's ice house added another lavish feature, storing large blocks of ice cut in winter from a nearby stream or pond and insulated with straw or sawdust so ice could last into the summer months.
