The Brazos Indian Reservation School operated in 1858-1859 for Indian children living on the Brazos Reservation, a 37,000-acre refuge created by the state in 1854. More than 1,000 Anadarko, Caddo, Delaware, Ioni, Shawnee, Tawakoni, and Tonkawa people lived there, farming and serving as U.S. Army scouts. Despite racial strife outside the reserve, teacher Z.E. Coombes reported unusual good will and harmony in the classroom, where English, spelling, writing, and arithmetic were taught to 34 to 60 students. The school closed when the Indians were moved north in 1859.
