On March 25, 1864, CSA General Nathan B. Forrest and the main body of his cavalry passed through Mayfield going to and from a destructive raid on Paducah. General Abraham Buford's division camped here, and Kentucky regiments were given leave to visit their homes and enlist recruits; all returned. A news item then led Forrest to send Buford from Tenn. through here again on April 14 to capture horses missed before.
