Established in Flagstaff in 1928, the Museum of Northern Arizona became a center for preserving Indigenous material, natural history specimens, and the history and cultures of northern Arizona and the Colorado Plateau. Founded by zoologist Dr. Harold S. Colton and artist Mary-Russell Ferrell Colton, it began in two rooms of the Flagstaff Woman’s Club and grew into a large exhibits building with research and collections facilities. Katharine Bartlett joined in 1930 and served as curator for 51 years. Its Ethnology Gallery highlights Hopi, Zuni, Navajo, and Pai peoples, and the museum also includes the Colton House cultural and research center outside Flagstaff.
