During Longstreet's withdrawal to winter quarters near Morristown, a critical cavalry action unfolded when the 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Army of the Cumberland, coming from the northwest through Dandridge, was attacked at Hays' Ferry, four miles northeast, by Confederates of Russell's Brigade and driven back through Dandridge to New Market, twelve miles northwest.
