Built in 1912 on Richmond Hill, also called Lighthouse Hill, Staten Island Light serves as the rear range light for vessels entering the Port of New York and New Jersey through the Ambrose Channel. Paired with West Bank Lighthouse, its fixed white light is visible for 18 miles when ships are on the correct line. The station also includes the Swash Channel Rear Light for a secondary route. Unusually, it still retains much of its original equipment, including a second-order Fresnel lens and glass reflector. Designated a New York City Landmark in 1968 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005, it remains an active and rare early-20th-century range light.
