Chewacla State Park is a 696-acre public recreation area in south Auburn, Alabama, centered on 26-acre Lake Chewacla for fishing, swimming, and non-motorized boating. The site’s history reaches back to Wright’s Mill in the late nineteenth century, when the mill pool was already a local swimming spot. The park was developed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, whose crews built roads, trails, structures, and the dam that created the lake, before Alabama opened it in 1939. CCC stone cabins and an arched masonry bridge still shape its character, while its trail system, designated a National Recreation Trail in 2011, helps make it one of Auburn’s most heavily used outdoor spaces.
