This community was incorporated on March 4, 1893, as the town of Black Mountain, with its limits measuring one mile from this point. In 1993, the town's Centennial Commission dedicated a monument to the first century families of the community, including the Begley, Brandon, Brooks, Brown, Clevenger, Elliot, Finch, Garland, Glenn, Goodson, Gouge, Gragg, Greenlee, Greenwood, Hemphill, Holiday, Hooper, Justus, Kerlee, Kneel, Lance, Medlin, Melton, Miller, Padgett, Parker, Perley, Summer, Slagle, Sneed, Stepp, Stone, Taylor, Tyson, and Wright families.
