This site served as a stopping place for packers carrying supplies to miners, and often two hundred jackasses stayed on the hill overnight, furnishing a concert that suggested the name Jackass Hill. Very coarse gold was found here, with $10,000 taken from one hundred square feet of ground, and quartz was found containing three-quarters of its total weight in gold.
