The Bay Lights transformed the western span of the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge into a monumental field of moving white light, using computer-generated patterns across thousands of LEDs on the suspension cables. Conceived by Ben Davis and designed by Leo Villareal for the bridge’s 75th anniversary, it opened in 2013 as a privately funded installation intended to draw attention to the Bay Bridge as a nighttime landmark. Though first temporary, it was reinstalled in a more durable form in 2016 and became one of the Bay Area’s most visible public artworks. Harsh marine conditions later forced shutdown and overhaul, and the lights returned in 2026.
