Passage Key National Wildlife Refuge is a small federal bird refuge on an island offshore from St. Petersburg, Florida, established in 1905 by President Theodore Roosevelt as part of the National Wildlife Refuge System to protect nesting seabirds and wading birds. The refuge covers 64 acres, including 36.37 acres designated as the Passage Key Wilderness Area in 1970. Once a roughly 60-acre barrier island known by several names, Passage Key supported many bird species, but a 1921 hurricane destroyed its freshwater lake and much of its vegetation, and later storms caused further loss. After the 2005 hurricanes, it had shrunk to a small sandbar and was closed to public use.
