Knight House, named for the Knight family, its longest occupants, is the oldest frame house in downtown Auburn and a typical example of houses built in the late 1700s. Caleb Lincoln, a Revolutionary War veteran, built the house in 1796, when Maine was still part of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Nathaniel Knight was a butcher and meat dealer. Originally located about a mile from its current site on Cross Street near North River Road, the house has been moved six times and had twelve different owners. It is furnished with typical late nineteenth century decor, and the shoe shop beside it, built in the 1790s, contains tools and equipment used in early shoemaking.
