Merced County honors members of its armed forces who gave their lives in service across conflicts from the Spanish-American War through the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, including World War One, World War Two, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and later interventions and actions in places such as the Dominican Republic, Lebanon, Grenada, Panama, Somalia, Haiti, and Bosnia-Herzegovina. For World War One, because statistics recorded only the state from which service members entered the service, it is believed that seventy-two to eighty-four Merced County service members died. The county records by name those who made the supreme sacrifice in World War Two, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, and includes tributes praising peacemakers, morale, service, brotherhood among soldiers, and the willingness to lay down one’s life for others.
