On August 21, 1863, one hundred and fifty citizens of Lawrence, defenseless, fell victim to the inhuman ferocity of border guerrillas led by Quantrell during his raid upon the town. Their names were recorded in the City Clerk's office and in the records of the State Historical Society in Topeka.
