From this viewpoint, Pueblo Bonito lay below as Chaco's largest great house. In the twelfth century it had more than 500 rooms around the edges of a plaza, with kivas inside and some rooms rising several stories high. Its massive masonry walls were thick at the base, and the construction used more than 300,000 sandstone blocks and roof beams. Pueblo Bonito changed over time and drought affected Chaco. Even after hardship, the place endured through time and weather, including earthquakes, pounding rain, gale-force winds in the canyon, floods, and fires. The Hopi people, the Pueblo peoples of New Mexico and Arizona, and the Navajo people still share a bond with Chaco.
