Twenty-two pioneer settlers were massacred at Pigeon Roost by Shawnee Indians on September 3, 1812. The Sixty-Third General Assembly of Indiana appropriated two thousand dollars for the erection of the monument, approved February 11, 1903, by Winfield T. Durbin, Governor of Indiana. The trustees were James W. Fortune, president, John W. Martin, secretary, and Joseph H. Hodapp, treasurer, and W.T. Hubbard was the contractor.
