Ephraim Kirby, born in Woodbury, Connecticut, on Feb. 23, 1757, served as First General Grand of High Priest of the General Grand Chapter Royal Arch Masons of the US from 1798-1804. Beginning at Bunker Hill, he fought in 17 battles and was wounded 13 times during the Revolutionary War, entering the Army as an enlisted man and being discharged as a Lt. Col. of Connecticut Militia. On April 6, 1804, President Jefferson appointed him Additional Judge of the Superior Court of Miss. Territory. He took station at Ft. Stoddert and presided over the first Superior Court held in what is now Alabama until his death there on Oct 20, 1804. His grave is in Ft. Stoddert Cemetery 2.5 miles east of this monument.
