The Friesenhahn family used this garden during their time on the property, and self sufficiency was essential for surviving in the country. Gardens and detailed knowledge of soils, climate, and the best crops to plant were important to each household. Soil fertility was maintained through regular application of manure. Vegetables planted here included cabbage, tomatoes, garlic, dill, and bell peppers. Fences had to be continually mended to keep rabbits and deer out. Canning vegetables in bumper crop years helped stretch the crop into seasons of shortages.
