Miles Benjamin McSweeney (1854 ~ 1909), whose home stood on this site, was the first Governor of South Carolina from Hampton County. He founded the Hampton County Guardian, served as a South Carolina representative from 1894 to 1896, as Lieutenant Governor from 1897 to 1899, and as Governor from 1899 to 1903. His grave is in Hampton Cemetery.
