Private John Grady of Duplin County is buried here after falling bravely while fighting for his country in the Battle of Moores Creek Bridge on 27th February, 1776. He was regarded as the first martyr in the cause of freedom in North Carolina and the only Whig killed in that battle. The battle fought here was the first victory gained by American arms in the Revolutionary War.
