Point Bolivar Light, a historic lighthouse at Port Bolivar near the entrance to Galveston Bay, has guided coastal navigation since the present tower was built in 1872, replacing an 1852 cast-iron lighthouse that was dismantled during the Civil War. It served as an active aid to mariners until 1933 and became especially notable for surviving major Texas coast storms. During the Galveston Hurricane of 1900, it sheltered at least 125 people and saved their lives, and it also withstood the 1915 hurricane. Long associated with keeper H. C. Claiborne and later Captain J. Brooks, the tower remained a prominent coastal landmark and has stayed in the Boyt family since 1947.
