John Cannon was born in 1820 on the river bottom land below this site and became a riverboat captain and builder of fine steamboats for the lower Mississippi trade. By 1840, this skilled pilot had begun his career as a steamboat entrepreneur. He built and piloted the famous Robert E. Lee, which defeated the Natchez in a celebrated steamboat race from New Orleans to St. Louis in 1870.
