John Herbert Dent, a U.S. naval officer born in Maryland in 1782, died at his plantation in St. Bartholomew's Parish, S.C. in 1823. In 1804, during the war with Tripoli, he served as acting captain of the frigate "Constitution," and during the War of 1812 he was the senior officer in charge of naval affairs at Charleston.
