On Aug. 4, 1927, Charles Lindberg piloted the “Spirit of St. Louis” to a landing at Langin Field in Moundsville, 0.1 mile west, where 140,000 people locally saw him; he led aviation into the rocket era and helped create the U.S. air transportation network.
