At dusk on September 19, 1863, Deshler's Brigade of Cleburne's Division in Hill's Corps, under Brigadier General James Deshler, came forward at this position and, after developing the line of Dodge's Brigade of Johnson's Division, moved left to turn that command's right flank. This movement uncovered Dodge's front, and in the darkness Preston Smith's Brigade of Cheatham's Division advanced directly against Dodge's line, mistaking it for Deshler's, and Preston Smith and two of his staff were killed. Meanwhile, Deshler's Brigade enveloped Dodge's right flank, resulting in the capture of nearly the whole of the 77th Pennsylvania and about half of the 79th Illinois, and the fighting continued for some time after dark until the Union troops withdrew to the Kelly field.
